It’s pretty hot today. 31 degrees celsius. My mum didn’t get how hot that was ’til I told her it was about 88 degrees fahrenheit (she’s in England, I’m in Canada).

I used this free, simple, online tool to work it outConvert temperatures online

Zoomii 'real' bookstore for USA and Canada June 23, 2008

If you use Amazon to buy your books (and even if you don’t) you’re going to love Zoomii. It’s a virtual book store, with ‘books’ (big and small) on ‘shelves’.And it’s available in Canada too. Sweet.

You can browse, search, check out different categories such as ‘bestseller’ or ‘self help’, and add to wishlist or cart. If you can’t find what you’re looking for among (or simply want some more information on) the 20,000 or so books in the ‘store’, you can click the link to do the same search on Amazon. And you’re automatically directed to Amazon to complete your purchase.

It’s pretty slow on Firefox 3 right now, but they’re working on it.

Online label maker from ACME June 19, 2008

Need labels? I did and found the ACME free online label maker.

Quite simply, it makes labels. That you can copy and paste into Word, Paint, etc…. or copy to your website or blog.

Super easy, just type in the wording you want, choose your font (the example below is ‘Babyblock’), add the effects you want (make it transparent or add shadow) and even add filters such as ‘slant’ or ‘TV’.

If you need inspiration there’s samples of labels and even some recent labels other people have made.

One caveat: if you’re using a label on your website make sure you save the file itself and not just the link.

Want a really easy drag and drop room planner?

Got one for you. I found this one on La Difference’s website and it’s created by icovia.com (but icovia provide these planners for a number of clients so you may have come across it elsewhere).

Very easy to navigate, with a number of pre-built plans to pick from. You can also choose a blank plan and specify your own dimensions. Once you’ve chosen the room you want to remodel, simply drag and drop the relevant items from the left side panel, then resize, zoom and measure away… hours of fun.

I love free stuff. I particularly like free geeky stuff. That’s why I love giveawayoftheday.com.

They get you free stuff EVERY day if you want it. And it’s not just junk.

Like today, for example, I got Macrium Reflect for free, which not only backs up your stuff but can also create an image of your hard drive for those disk failure moments, or impulsive/ mistaken file deletions.

And boy do I need it.

This is another one of those sites that does what it says on the tin. I love those.

downforeveryoneorjustme.com lets you know whether a site is down for everyone or just for you. But you guessed that already.

First heard about this site a while back on geekbrieftv.

Brush up your HTML June 11, 2008

Now, my HTML skills are a bit rusty (what do you expect, with all these fancy apps nowadays…) and I don’t find I need to use ‘em too much, but sometimes, you just need to.

If, like me, you need a quick refresher on the basics I can strongly recommend the w3schools website – there’s practice examples and all sorts. It’s not pretty, but it does what it says on the tin.

And to get a feel for what your gobbledeegook is gonna look like, I like this real-time HTML editor.

And all for free.
